Vehicle Overview

U.S. News and World Report names the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe among the top five midsize SUVs in the market-and for good reason. Already known as the first SUV ever produced by Hyundai, the Santa Fe has since provided what customers expect from a crossover: ample interior space, above-average fuel efficiency, and considerable off-road capability. Now that it is midway through its third production cycle, the Santa Fe gets a number of updates to keep it fresh. There are four trims to choose from: SE, Limited, SE Ultimate, and Limited Ultimate trims.

Base-level exterior features of the 2017 model include a rear spoiler, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rack side rails, power heated side mirrors, and projector headlights that come with daytime running LED accents. Getting the Limited trim adds a pair of fog lights at the front for increased illumination, turn-signal indicators on the mirrors, and a smart liftgate to open and lift the trunk with no hands, as well as a replacement of the halogen lights with LED ones. The Ultimate models-the SE Ultimate and Limited Ultimate-get 19-inch alloy wheels in place of the 18-inch ones.

Designed and classified as a midsize crossover SUV, the new vehicle has three rows. On the SE trim level-the SE and SE Ultimate-the second row has two captain's chairs, which means you'd be able to seat up to six people, since the third-row bench-style seat can only accommodate two people (in addition to the driver's and front passenger seat). However, with the Limited trim level-that is, the Limited and Limited Ultimate-the second row has a bench-style seat that can seat up to three people; thus maximum occupancy increases to seven. Overall, passenger volume is measured at 146.6 cubic feet. The trunk provides 80 cubic feet of cargo volume, and you can increase it by folding down the second- and third-row seats. Seating convenience includes 8-way power adjustability and 4-way power lumbar support on the driver's seat.

On the Limited, Hyundai adds 4-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat, leather upholstery, and front-seat heating capability. If you choose the SE Ultimate or Limited Ultimate, you'd also get front-seat cooling capability, second-row heating capability, and an integrated memory system for the driver's side. At the base level, the new crossover vehicle gets a host of comfort and convenience features that include HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel-mounted controls, dual-zone front automatic climate control, a three-month SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, a six-speaker stereo system with a 7-inch screen and single-disc CD player, and a Blue Link suite of services that includes vehicle service scheduling and SOS emergency assistance. The Limited has a few added features, such as a universal transceiver for remote-controlling the garage doors, auto dimming on the rearview mirror, and a proximity key entry system with push-button engine start. The Ultimate models come with several more: a panoramic sunroof, steering wheel heating capability, a 8-inch touchscreen navigation system, and a 12-speaker Infinity surround sound system (in place of the six-speaker one).

Although the standard drivetrain on the new crossover SUV is front-wheel drive, you can go with an all-wheel drivetrain for greater traction ability. Its MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension keeps trips virtually turbulence-free. And the motor-driven power steering ensures sharp and precise turning, as well as more energy efficiency (since it uses an independent source of power, rather than the engine).

The engine on the SUV is called the Lambda II. It is a 3.3-liter V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, and it leads out to a dual exhaust system. The Lambda II is tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which has a SHIFTRONIC shifter to shift gears on demand-similar to a manual transmission. Included is an Active ECO system, which shuts down certain functions to increase fuel efficiency. Depending on powertrain and drivetrain configuration, the vehicle can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

To prevent serious injury (or worse) in the event of a collision, the 2017 model has dual front impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag, a pair of side impact airbags mounted on the front seats, and two front and two rear side curtain airbags mounted on the roof. Also on the crossover are electronic vehicle stability control, rearview camera, downhill brake control, hill start assist, traction control, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with anti-lock braking. Hyundai adds blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist on the Limited trim. On the Ultimate trim level, Hyundai swaps the rearview camera with a 360-degree camera and rear parking sensors for a more robust driving monitoring system.
